Secret Societies

A secret society is an organization that conceals its activities and members from the public. If an organization is truly a secret society, the public may never even know about its existence. Other organizations may wish to participate in the community, but still keep their inner workings a secret. Some secret societies may maintain secrecy as a traditional custom, dating back to times of historical persecution. In other cases, secrets might be kept to conceal nefarious or illegal behavior. As a third reason, some secret societies don't want their philosophical teachings to be "profaned," mocked, or otherwise abused by the outside world. Because of their shadowy nature, suspicion and allegations of intrigue have traditionally surrounded secret societies.
