Spirituality

There is often a great difficulty in communicating the philosophical subtleties associated with certain words and terms. When one hears a word like 'spirit' or 'spirituality,' a person may be inclined to immediately draw a conclusion that the discussion has taken a decidedly supernatural or religious turn. In a very broad sense, 'spirit' is loosely associated with the idea that there is an animating force behind life and nature that science is currently unable to identify or observe. The term 'spirit' comes from the Latin spiritus, which means "breath." In fact, our word 'inspiration' relates directly back to the metaphysical concept of 'spirit' and it is the reason why sacred texts are sometimes termed, "divinely-inspired." 'Spirit' and 'soul' are often used interchangeably, and they are very much related, both from an historical and etymological standpoint. However, from a metaphysical point of view, they represent two completely different concepts. People often describe themselves as "spiritual but not religious" after they have left a traditional religious institution but still maintain theistic beliefs. However, the profound realizations of true spirituality require an equal balance of intellectual study and deep personal introspection.
