On this day in history, July 22, 1893... Katharine Lee Bates, an English professor from Wellesley College, wrote a poem entitled "Pikes Peak" while on a train trip to Colorado Springs, where she was to teach a short summer school class at Colorado College. She was inspired by several of the sights during her trip. The poem "Pikes Peak" was first published on July 4, 1895 by the periodical The Congregationalist. The poem was set to music by Samuel A. Ward, which was first published in 1910 and titled America the Beautiful.
