Arlington National Cemetery was established after the grounds of the mansion at Arlington House, which had been the estate of the family of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's wife Mary Anna (Custis) Lee (a great-granddaughter of Martha Washington), were confiscated by the federal government. This was done to ensure that General Lee would never be able to return home. The house has since become a memorial to Robert E. Lee.
