Elizabeth Tower, also known as "Big Ben," began keeping time for the first time. The name "Big Ben" actually refers to the bells of the clock tower, but the nickname has also extended to the entire tower, itself. When it first began keeping time, clockmaker Ian Westworth said that it was “the prince of timekeepers: the biggest, most accurate four-faced striking and chiming clock in the world.” The tower is probably one of the most prominent and iconic cultural symbols of the United Kingdom.
