On this day in history, May 8, 1886...

Pharmacist John Pemberton began selling a carbonated beverage named "Coca-Cola" as a patent medicine. Eventually, the formula was sold by Pemberton to businessman Asa Griggs Candler, whose marketing tactics led Coca-Cola to dominate the world's soft-drink market throughout the 20th century. The drink's name refers to two of its original ingredients, which were kola nuts and coca leaves.
