Now here's an interesting story about a secret society I have never heard of. And interestingly, as the video points out, the word "oculist" is very similar to "occultist" and while it may be easy to mistake these terms while reading them, they definitely mean two completely different things. This video gives a great overview. The story began with the attempt to translate a 250 year-old manuscript written in cipher code. It was eventually cracked and found to be a sort of initiation ritual, apparently for a group called the Great Enlightened Society of Oculists. It would appear that the group may have been an amalgamation of early eye surgeons and enlightenment-era secret societies. The emphasis was placed on "sight" and the eye as a symbol for our perception of reality. Here is a link to the wired article that has a lot of information: They Cracked This 250-Year-Old Code, and Found a Secret Society Inside It's not known whether or not the society still exists today, but the society seemed to suggest that their society was the "true" enlightened society and other groups, such as the Freemasons, were merely charlatans and even made the claim that Freemasonry was instituted by them as a hoax.
