On this day in history, August 31, 1939...

A small group of German operatives dressed in Polish uniforms seized the Gleiwitz radio station and broadcast a short anti-German message in Polish. The goal of the attack was to create a false flag--the Germans wanted to make the attack look appear as though anti-German Polish saboteurs had actually attacked the radio station. On the next day, Germany initiated the Fall Weiss operation--the invasion of Poland. World War II had begun in Europe.
