On this day in history, August 16, 1989...

An intense solar flare created during a geomagnetic storm caused three disc drives to fail in succession on what was described as a ‘fault-tolerant’ computer system in Canada, leading to a halt of all trading on Toronto’s stock market for at least three hours. This solar flare was even stronger than the X15 flare recorded just a few months earlier, in March of the same year.
