The iconic Hollywood Sign was dedicated in the Hollywood Hills section of Los Angeles. Originally, the sign read "HOLLYWOODLAND" and was erected as an advertisement for a local real estate development. The campaign was originally intended to only last a year and a half, but after the rise of American cinema in Los Angeles during the Golden Age of Hollywood, the sign became an internationally-recognized symbol and it was decided the sign should remain permanently.
