Joseph A. Walker piloted a North American X-15 to an altitude above 100 km, which, under international convention, qualified the flight as human spaceflight with hypersonic speeds reaching mach 7. Walker was a Captain in the United States Air Force, an American World War II pilot, an experimental physicist, a NASA test pilot. The North American X-15 was a rocket plane which was designed and built for NASA's X-plane project.
